Respect...

posted Sun, 08/20/06

What are the effects of this word?. Does it has to do with position or status?. It might be. But is more. Respect is something we feel or show. It has to do with esteem and appreciation. It may also be a courteous relation. Does it depend on the receiving end?. Some may argue in the affirmative. Some will say that they show respect to deserving ones only. If so what are the deserving criteria?. And who define them?. Does it depend on status, a certain kind of activity or a certain amount of wealth?. Where does respect really spring forth?...

I believe respect comes from the giver end. And it starts in self respect. It doesn't come from what I am or what I have accomplished. Though I recognize that there are lives who stand over the crowd due to their accomplishments. Yet, if we leave it there how would we teach respect to children whose lives are starting to bloom in activity. And it is here where the origins of respect are taught. What do we give value to?. Things, position, careers, academic  education, degrees, accomplishments?. Those are but an external component of what an individual with self respect will work to accomplish. Does the gardener who tend to the plant life under his care is worth less respect than the veterinary who cares for the animal life brought to his or her atention?. What do I value the most?. This will define to whom I show respect. Do I value a big check account as the epitome of success?. Do I value the most the great technical achievements of a martial artist? Do I value the efforts of less talented students working hard to excel?. This might seem as obvious issues but they are not. We need to stop a while and think this thing over. Respect comes from what I value the most. Do I value life as the most precious thing on earth in order to respect every living being in this planet?. Be it plant life, animal or human life?.
