Authority... (2)

posted Mon, 09/03/07
I could not continue talking yesterday about this important theme of authority, too much work in a new digital project I am preparing for our stores. But, I am here now. Authority is a tough word because we all have issues with it. It might have started in our childhood to continue into our adolescence all the way to our adulthood. Why is this?. Perhaps, this is due in part because we resists limits. Here in the Western part of our world we are taught since early life to be individual and different. We live life in an individualistic approach. And as such we see our lives as limitless in what we are and want to achieve. Which in itself is not bad. Things get confused when we forget the teachings of the other part of the world. Ideas as inter-relation a inter-dependence are equally valid and complementary.

What does this has to do with authority?. A lot... But first, some definitions...

  • Authentic: Conforming to fact  and therefore worthy of trust, reliance,or belief.Having a claimed and verifiable origin or authorship; not counterfeit or copied.
  • Authenticity: The quality or condition of being authentic, trustworthy, or genuine.
  • Author: The original writer of a literary work. To assume responsibility for the content of...
  • Authority: The power to enforce laws, exact obedience, command, determine, or judge.Power assigned to another; authorization. An accepted source of expert information or advice. Power to influence or persuade resulting from knowledge or experience. Confidence derived from experience or practice; firm reassurance.
And yet another relevant definition,

  • Power: The ability or capacity to perform or act effectively. A specific capacity, faculty, or aptitude.Strength or force exerted or capable of being exerted; might. The ability or official capacity to exercise control; authority. A person, group, or nation having great influence or control  over others.

Let's start by saying that my personal worth does not depend on no other than myself. In this sense I am my own authority.  As such, being my own authority and owner I choose where to invest1 my power and influence. And this word invest has rather interesting connotations...

Invest: To commit (money or capital) in order to gain a financial return. To spend or devote for future advantage or benefit. To devote morally or psychologically, as to a purpose; commit. To endow with authority or power.
